Microsoft plans to invest approximately $3 billion to enhance its AI and Azure cloud-computing capabilities in India, CEO Satya Nadella announced on Tuesday. This move underscores India’s significance as a growth hub for U.S. tech firms, thanks to its population of over 1.4 billion and affordable internet access.
High-profile tech leaders, including Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang and Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun, have also visited India recently. Nadella described this investment as the “single largest expansion” Microsoft has undertaken in the country, during a conference in Bengaluru.

The company aims to train 10 million individuals in AI skills across India by 2030. This builds on Nadella’s previous commitment, made during his visit last year, to offer AI training to 2 million people by 2025, with a focus on smaller cities and rural areas.
Nadella also met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to discuss technology, innovation, AI and Microsoft’s ambitious expansion plans in India.
Globally, Microsoft is investing heavily in AI and data center infrastructure, having recently announced an $80 billion plan for fiscal year 2025. Over half of this investment will be in the U.S., focusing on data centers to support AI model training and cloud-based applications.
